Membrane examines the unstable boundary between what is visible and what remains inaccessible. Drawing from historical portraiture, sacred imagery, classical sculpture and collective memory, Roman Lefebvre transforms familiar images through oil painting, abrasion, handwritten language and transparent epoxy resin.
The resin functions simultaneously as preservation and interference. It seals the image while reflection, distortion and language interrupt the viewer’s access to it. The handwritten text does not explain the subject; it creates another surface between perception and certainty.
Across the series, figures inherited from history appear suspended between recognition and disappearance. Membrane asks whether revealing an image brings us closer to its meaning—or simply expands the unknown.
